Book Review #78: Dark Blossoms : Neel Mullick

Blurb:

Sam returns home from a business trip a day before his son's thirteenth birthday and is looking forward to being with his family, when his world is cruelly shattered in one fell swoop. Initially he thinks he can cope with the loss, but finally seeks the help of Cynthia, an experienced therapist, to regain his equipoise. What he does not know is that Cynthia herself is trying to cope with a debilitating divorce and the sinister shadow of her ex-husband over her daughter...
What happens when doctor and patient find themselves in the same sinking boat? Moreover, when they are rowing in opposite directions--one clinging to the past, and the other unable to get rid of it! In the midst of it all is Lily, Cynthia's daughter, who harbors a secret that has the power to explode the lives around her. Taut with tension and intensity, Dark Blossom is a glimpse of what lies under the surface of apparently 'normal' people.

First I would like to thank the author for a personalized signed copy of the book.

My Take:

Some books are unusual. Unusual in a good way. This book is one such.

The book is very high on emotional content. Keeps you on the edge till the end. So many layers of people and emotions run parallel and is very creatively weaved. A beautiful story which talks about losing people, coping up with losses and the suffering faced.

Sam loses his family in a freak accident and his world comes crashing down. He is unable to come in terms with it or accept it. Cynthia, a doctor treating Sam helping him overcome the phase, has her own demons to fight with, she had a difficult marriage and divorce and is trying to mend her relation with her daughter Lily. Lily has her own issues which she finds difficult to confront and move on.

How the stories intertwine, how they deal with their fears, stand up for themselves and learn to accept and embrace life forms the story. The title and the cover is apt. It is in the darkest that some life changing incidents and relations blossom. The author has weaved a nice story using the broken hearts and life changing emotions. Very sensitivity handled story-line. The suspense keeps you to the edge. Every moment we get to read about a new facet. Unpredictable till the end. This one keeps you hooked.

Rating:
