Book Review # 179 Midnight's Star: Shilpa Suraj

 Blurb:

Visually impaired author and current flavor of the Indian literary scene, Dev Arya, has not just triumphed against the odds in his life, he's annihilated them. He's got fame, fortune and floozies in abundance. And yet, he's lonely.

Cafe owner and only child to her dependent father, Avni Desai is broke, heartbroken and a true survivor. But no matter how hard she hustles, she's still struggling to stay afloat.

And then, one day, Dev walks into her cafe...and everything changes for both of them. From excellent tiramisu to ear shattering singing, from dramatic friends to accident prone sexcapades, they embark on the ride of a lifetime.  Will it all be worth it though? Will two broken souls find a way to heal each other? Or do the fractures go so deep that there is no way for either of them to find the love they so deeply crave and yet can't seem to have?

My Take:

One of the best reads this year. I loved the way the author adds flair and colors to the leads. I loved the underplayed way, more like subtle yet effective. I liked the strength the characters portrayed.

Dev, a successful author and awesome at reading people with his sixth sense. Although an accident has resulted in losing his eyes, he still has the zeal to live and write about lives and weave magic with words.

Avni is a café owner for who has worked hard to be where she is. Losing her Mom and with dad physically disabled she, with some emotional support of her friends who stand by her like a rock and a fiancee who also is a partner in her cafe life looks promising to her but out of blue she is jolted out of her happily ever after reverie and has to fight for what has been rightfully hers. Will she be able to? How do Dev and Avni handle the attraction that threatens to turn to something more meaningful and for life?

Do they want that? Can they overcome their baggage’s and accept what life offers them or will they develop a cold foot? Read the book to find out.

As usual amazing narration and engaging story line. Full marks for capturing the raw emotions in their most pure form. The reader can connect with what the leads feel and why.  The support characters like Avnis friends, Devs lawyer friend and her father add spice to the story and help it move forward with finesse.

Pick this up and you won’t be disappointed.
